It is *really* hard to blog like this…
But someone really wants to remain on my lap. We’ll see how well I can write while holding a squirmer, and typing one-handed.
Is everyone else as OB-SESSED with the olympic trials as I am? I can’t decide which part I like best! The man candy? The fiery patriotism I feel when I see the American flag on the speedoed behinds of the male swimmers? Ok, so maybe that’s not “patriotism” I’m feeling, but man, it makes me PROUD to be an American. Maybe it’s my fascination for the absurd amount of dedication it takes to become an olympian. Unless there’s an olympic reading team, I don’t think I’ll ever quite grasp or understand the determination it takes to become an Olympian.
What would a reading gold medal look like? I really hope it’s a gold rainbow, and bestowed upon me by Levar Burton.

Butterfly in the sky, I can go twice as high.
It’s not that I am not determined. Having lost 175 lbs, I know what determination is. The difference between olympians, and the rest of us sods, is persistance. (and superhuman strength, speed, and talent)
Determination is also making a goal your bitch.
I love setting goals. Big goals. Small goals. All of them. My latest goals are about building muscle, dropping my body fat pre-skin removal surgery, putting together my media kit, and somehow weasel my way into writing an article for a PRINT magazine about my experience with weight loss surgery. I set goals for my goals. I make points of success to achieve in order for me to conquer my goals. I TELL people to help keep my behind accountable.
Seven Steps to Make a Goal Your Bitch.
- Say it “out-loud”. Acknowledge your goal to someone, and your intent to make it so.
- Write it down. Get that goal on paper. (or a “Doogie Howser MD” style journal)
- Celebrate the small successes that help you on your journey
- Make a “vision board” of your goals. You can use pinterest, a cork board, designed like a manifesto, that may be in a Lisa Frank trapper keeper written in scented markers.
- Leave reminders everywhere about your goal. I just posted a note on my fridge that says “protein, eat it”.
- visualize your goal coming to pass. really see it in your mind.
- Truly reward yourself when you achieve that goal.
What you reward yourself with is up to you. Personally, I like spa treatments and high proof alcohol. Best if the two are served together. A cocktail and a pedicure. Heaven. G-d bless NYC for having multiple places I can do this. (though, you might end up with an interesting airbrush pattern on your toes after this)
Sometimes, I reward myself by making a very leisurely dinner, instead of my usual “get the damn dinner on the table or the four year old may sprout horns and try to eat his sister”.
Yesterday was not one of those days. I made the quick dinner. Burgers, salad, and green bean fries.
If you haven’t had green bean fries, you’re missing out. They’re healthy, crunchy, and your 13 month old will pound them like it’s her job.
