Today, one of my all-time favorite author/poets would turn ninety-three. Charles Bukowski.
In honor of his birthday, as much as I’m not a “quote-y person” (unless accompanied by cute graphics with cats, puppies, or illustrations of cats and puppies) Here are some of my favorite quotes of his, and why they resonate so loudly with me.
First: My very favorite:
“Sometimes you climb out of bed in the morning and you think, I’m not going to make it, but you laugh inside — remembering all the times you’ve felt that way.”
You don’t laugh because it’s particularly funny, you laugh because you know you’ll persevere, and because you’ve obviously lived through the rest of it, and you’ll get through this as well.
“If you’re going to try, go all the way. There is no other feeling like that. You will be alone with the gods, and the nights will flame with fire. You will ride life straight to perfect laughter. It’s the only good fight there is.”
I’m an actor. This is 100% the case for pretty much all creatives. When you do put your all into it, and you see things come to fruition, it’s like no other feeling on the planet. It’s better than nearly anything. It’s better than realizing you’ve got two extra tickets to the free beer and chocolate parade. It’s better than that one dream you had featuring that one actor, with the slightly ginger hair, who may or may not have played “young Magneto” and he may or may not (not) have been clothed in the dream…..better than that even.
“A love like that was a serious illness, an illness from which you never entirely recover.”
I once told the man, that I was “terminally in love with him”. To which he responded, “I’m more like herpes, I won’t kill you, you just have to live with me hanging out”. CB gets it.”Without literature, life is hell.”
“Without literature, life is hell.”
“We are here to laugh at the odds and live our lives so well that Death will tremble to take us.”
Sucking the marrow out of life, carpe-ing the fucking diem, dancing in the streets, all-consuming joy, crazed laughter, maniacal love-making, insanely long walks alone, squeezing your kids too tight just to feel your heart fill. Fuck the Grim Reaper, I’ll stare him down just to say “here, I am, and I hope you’ve got strength to carry the weight of all of the life I’ve lived.”
Put Charles Bukowski on your TBR list. He’s what Vonnegut would’ve been had Vonnegut been a chronic over-sharer. He was a man not afraid to show you all the crevices of his soul, and man did he know how to tell a love story. His prose was simple, unfettered by the trappings of the extremely literate. He was the perfect example of an EB White-inspired genius. He held death in his left pocket, and when he finally gave way to the dark, he left us with an astounding literary legacy.
