Punching With Fists of Fury

Let’s talk about our bodies, shall we?

You seriously need to watch that video in all its glory.

Yesterday, the captain had a rough day. He inadvertently got a hold of some ice cream, and had quite the tender tummy. By tender tummy, I mean his ass exploded unexpectedly while we were shopping. Have you ever bathed a 4 year old with wipes in a parking lot and then put down a placemat for him to sit on, in his car seat naked? No? Then you haven’t lived. I pray to the sweet baby Jesus you never have to.

When we were talking about how he was embarrassed, and how he didn’t like how his tummy did that to him, I decided to turn the tables. I decided to ask him what he likes about his body. He told me that he really likes his “guns” because they’re big and strong like a lumberjack or Jose Reyes. (we haven’t told him he is no longer playing for his beloved Mets anymore.) I then asked him what he likes BEST about his body, he was completely honest and said:

“my wee wee. I can make my pee go ANYWHERE, Mama. You can’t.”

Ahh, boys, it starts so young. I laughed and then experienced just the tiniest bit of penis envy, recalling back to the time I was at a music festival (picture lalapalooza, only way more lame) and I had about 2 beers and 93785349863 oz of water. There was but one, poo coated port a potty that looked like a crap coffin I was to be taken away in. My GBF just went to the trees, hid himself, and peed. Sometimes, aim would be nice. Also, why can’t people poop in a hole? HOW HARD IS IT???

Something struck me about how he answered. Not a thing he said was about how his body looked, it was all about what his body could do. Sure, he was mad at his digestive system, but he knew his body was strong and powerful. He marvels at how far he can throw a ball or how he can pick up his gallons of milk, etc.

When you ask a woman what her favorite part of her body is, it’s more often than not, aesthetically oriented. “I like my hair, my ankles, my collarbone”. When was the last time you heard someone say “I like my uterus because it carried my children” or “I like my vagina because that bitch is a survivor” (I am sorry if you don’t anthropomorphize your ladybits in the same way I do; you’re missing out) or even “I like my legs because they have carried me through this awesome life.”?? Almost never.

On most days, if you asked me what part of my body I like best, I’d say something like “my eyes” or  ”my calves”, or a smart ass answer like “my fists of fury”. I wonder if we can change this in ourselves. I wonder if we can focus on how our bodies are strong, and what they can do, instead of what they look like. Our bodies are amazing. They grow, get ill, restore, get strong, bring forth life, run, walk, cry, laugh, eat, digest, think, and thrive.

If we did focus on how and what our bodies do, would we treat it better? Would we talk to it nicer, train it a little more, fuel it a little better?

We put makeup on our faces to cover flaws (including the GIANT pimple I am currently sporting), wear spanx to smooth lumps, and heels to make our legs look longer. We also take our vitamins so things work, and go to school to enrich our mind. For some reason, even though we do all of this, we’re content to fill our amazing machines with garbage. We eat food from cans lined with BPA,  high fructose corn syrup, fake dyes, and fake fats.

I am not content with that. I want to fuel my amazing machine in the best way I can. I will fuel it with beer and coffee foods that give me energy, keep me strong, keep my body moving, and fine tune its mechanisms. I want everyone else to do the same! I’m not saying don’t eat the occasional brownie or burger. I am simply saying to eat real food, know where your food comes from, and fuel it for life–not looks–and yes; eat the occasional cake.

I LOVE cake and pie. I would put it in my machine every day if I could. Unfortunately, that would slow my workings. I knew I had to figure out how to use it to benefit me. How could I use it to strengthen me?

I decided to develop a HEALTHY, QUICK cake recipe. A cake to fuel my machine. I did just that and here it is, for your amazing machine.

What an adorable story and great lesson you taught him. My favorite body part- lately my arms and upper body because they are helping me reach new levels of strength that I never thought possible in crossfit. This cake sounds great, I’ve been thinking of trying out a single serve protein cake… might have to try something just like this out.

I like my arms…I aspire to have arms like Angela Bassett in What’s Love Got to Do With It…I’m not quite there but I’m close :)

And that muffin looks so frickin’ tasty – I need to experience it!

  7. Ha ha ha, I love your blog. Great story and awesome recipe! I’ve been making something similar in the microwave but use vanilla protein and peanut flour most of the time. I’ll have to make your version soon.

I fully agree with your quote on people being content with eating crap while being so concerned about their appearance. I wish more people could realize the connection between real food and being active and appearance.
Again, great blog, I’m now following!! Check mine out if you get the chance.

  8. Oh, meant say my fav body part would be my legs because they always stand up for me……ok, corny, sorry. But they are my favorite….
