In the interest of hunger and distraction, Tim, the kids, and I went to go pick apples. How can you possibly think about anything else when you are chasing a 3 year old all over a farm trying to prevent mass mayhem. We were also trying to prevent him from putting EVERYTHING into our wagon!! Grass, grape leaves, critters, field hands.
We were there to pick one thing. Honeycrisp apples. Lots and lots of Honeycrisp apples. I was approaching the farm with such agita. “Will they still be there?” “Will they be good this year” “Will other people have figured out that this farm has the best apples and now they’re all gone?” “Will my stupid choice of footwear come back to bite me on the ass?” Answer? Yes.
2 hours of picking apples, frolicking on the farm like some sort of merry band of misfit farmers, and killing our back picking peppers. If you ever question why you pay what you pay for something, go harvest it for a while. Really get on your hands and knees and pick banana peppers or walk through corn fields and see how it feels, it’s not easy. If you still question it, read “Omnivore’s Dilemma.” If you still question it, you suck at life.
In case you aren’t into reading boxes, we went to Lawrence Farms Orchards, this is our FIFTH year going, and it really gets better every year. They have all sorts of pick your own apples and produce. They have about a gajillion types of apples, corn, peppers, cruciferous veg, cherries, peaches, pears, berries, grapes, holy hell hot chilis, etc. This place is about the size of Brooklyn. It’s really nice that a place like this is only 90 minutes outside of NYC. It’s so beautiful up there. Let me tell you, living in Brooklyn, “quiet and pastoral” is not something we often say. We’re more likely to say “fun and stupid busy.” If you read Door Sixteen, you already know all about Newburgh.
Bonus? There’s a Sonic REALLY close by, so if you time it right, you can go to the Sonic between 2-4 and get a rt 44 unsweetened iced tea half price!!!! Their ice is perfect. Small niblets of frozen water crunchiness.
My list of “must makes” with my apples.
- applesauce cake with butterscotch frosting
- pie. lots and lots of pie
- baked apples and raisins
- applesauce (unsweetened)
- apple cinnamon protein waffles (recipe wednesday)
- apple strudel
- apple jam
I’m really more excited about this than any one person should be. It’s getting sad. I get as excited now about waffles as I once did about going out! HA!
Tonight at the gym is going to be a nice, long 8 mi on the dreadmill followed by a full circuit upper body workout. I am READY!! Just as soon as I conjure up enough energy to stand up. I’m gonna get up, I promise. After a nap, maybe.
